Why would you even want a professionally monitored home security system?

How important is professional smart home monitoring?

Sometimes when thinking about the security of your home, it’s easy to overlook a smart home security system that’s professionally monitored. Why would you need this service when you can just buy some wifi connected cameras and motion-detecting smart devices. All of these things can alert you with a quick notification right... You’re protected now!

Well, it’s not that simple,

How easy to miss. What if you're in a meeting, at the gym, or at the movies with your phone on "do not disturb". Maybe you're on an airplane, busy at work or on vacation with no cell service. There are a surprising number of times when we do not have our phones on us or simply miss notifications

Just plain overwhelming. Checking every notification, sorting harmless activity alerts from the suspicious and investigating each alert multiple times a day isn’t easy or intuitive. It becomes overwhelming. We need things that simplify our lives, not complicate them. So you might find a great price on a camera, but when you have to provide your own security, you'll end up investing more time than you would think.

Side story. A year ago I tried a nest camera. It was cool technological novelty at first. Every time my pup jumped on the couch(that’s a no no) I would get a notification and I could actually talk to him which was awesome!! But I started to notice that every time a shadow moved it sent me notifications and it never recorded immediately. It always had a slight delay and the recording always seemed to miss the action. After awhile I got so tired of checking alerts I turned the notifications off on my phone. It’s now in a box on my shelf.

Stay focused. If there's an emergency at home, your job is to focus on one thing: keeping you and your loved ones out of harm's way. Let our smart home security system call the police for you while you tend to your loved ones!

What are the Pros,

One of the best things about a professionally monitored smart home security system is the proactive defense it provides for your family. Optimus and alarm.com’s defense technology monitors your system and detects potential dangers outside of your daily activity. Like a door being opened early on a saturday morning when you’re usually sleeping. Optimus smart home security systems can even take action on your behalf by sending you an alert to notify you of the unusual activity. “Honey, did the kids just open the door?” No more useless alerts being sent to your phone every time a curtain moves because the A/C turned on.

Alarm.com’s Insights Engine, Geo-Services and Crash and Smash protection are all examples of proactive technological defenses that work on their own to keep your home safe without sending you useless notification. These technologies use Alarm.com's cloud intelligence and real-time data from devices around your home to determine if there is a threat.

However, the most helpful safeguard has a human element: professional security monitoring, which is provided by Optimus Home Security and Solar.

How does it work?

In an alarm event at your home—a break-in, medical alert or fire—our smart home security system sends an emergency signal, using a dedicated cellular connection, to a 24-7 professionally staffed monitoring station. There, a professional assesses the situation and quickly alerts your local law enforcement or fire department to the emergency, regardless of whether or not you’re at work, the gym, or just have your phone on do not disturb. After all, if someone breaks in you want the cops called right? (Our systems also come with two-way voice!! Shoot me a text or give me a call to find out more about this amazing feature and how it could save your life.)  This service gives you peace of mind knowing that if someone breaks in, the only thing you need to worry about is keeping your family safe while we get the police there asap.

Insights Engine

Alarm.com’s Insights Engine is a proactive, technological defense for your family that recognizes and responds to unexpected activity around your home.

For example, you use your front door a lot on weekday mornings, as you and your family leave to take the kids to school and head to work. On weekends, however, you might not typically open it until later. So when your front door opens early on a Saturday morning you get an unexpected activity notification, indicating that your kids are likely exploring the front yard.

Insight is able to learn your family's particular patterns, detect unusual activity, and then act quickly on your behalf to address a potential problem.

Geo-Services

Imagine if your alarm system told your house when you were on your way home, and adjusted the climate to the perfect temperature right as you pulled into the driveway.  Or if, when you left, you forgot to arm your system or lock your front door, so your smart home security system did it for you.

With a Optimus smart home security system powered by Alarm.com, this is a reality.

Geo-Services, is a  location-based smart home feature, that uses your smartphone's location to do useful things on your behalf when you leave home or when you're on your way back. These range from a simple notification to a real action like locking your front door, adjusting your thermostat, or even turning on lights.

Crash and Smash Protection

Burglars use many tactics for entering a home without being caught. Some use stealthy, others are fast. Crash and Smash Protection is a technological defense against a ‘fast' tactic that typically defeats other security systems.

A crash and smash burglary is when an intruder breaks in and smashes the home's security panel to prevent it from sending an emergency signal. They ‘crash' through the front door(the fastest way to get into a home) then ‘smash' the security panel as fast as possible.

This technique takes advantage of the delay that security systems gives you when they arrive home to disarm the system.  It's typically 30 to 60 seconds, giving you plenty of time to walk over to the panel and type in your code. With a typical burglary, once the panel counts all the way down to zero, it automatically sends an emergency alert to responders.  In a crash and smash attack, the burglar tries to disable the panel before it can send the signal.

Thirty seconds isn't a lot of time, but it can be enough for an experienced burglar to find and destroy your panel with a hammer or any other object that would disable it. But with Alarm.com's patented crash and smash technology, your system still works even if the panel is destroyed.

How Crash and Smash Protection works

Alarm.com's smarter home security system constantly monitors sensors around the home to proactively protect you against events like a crash and smash burglary. This happens securely in Alarm.com's cloud, so an intruder can't get to it with their hammer.

When your security system starts its countdown, Alarm.com takes note of the sensor activity.  If the panel suddenly stops communicating before sending either a ‘disarm' or ‘emergency' signal, Alarm.com reports a suspected Crash and Smash event to your home's central monitoring station where a trained security professional assesses the situation and quickly alerts law enforcement if it's a crash and smash attack.
